Greenhouse Gates

The Poniente Almeriense is an inhospitable stretch of southern Spain marked by little rain fall, poor soils, and strong ocean blown winds. At the heart of it is El Ejido, home to the largest concentration of greenhouses in Europe producing the melons, peppers, cucumbers and, most importantly, cheap tomatoes for the rest of the continent. The greenhouses are a strange architecture of environmental necessity and commercial interest all baking under the Almerian sun.

Industrial Landscapes: Almeria

More on the scale of greenhouse production in southern Spain. Images of the landscapes along the road from El Ejido to Almeria, through the heart of the area’s agricultural zone. Huge investments in infrastructure, namely electricity and water, have turned the area from an arid scrubland into a sea of industrial plastic greenhouses that stretch to the horizon in every direction.
